United By Faith, Growing in Fellowship
Happy Thursday Brothers and Sisters of the Anaheim SDA Church,
Warm greetings to each of you! As we approach another Sabbath together, I would like to remind you of a few special events happening this weekend.
As it is the first Sabbath of the month, following the worship service, we will gather for a potluck in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is welcome to join. Please bring a vegetarian dish of your choice, and let’s enjoy a wonderful time in fellowship. For those bringing hot dishes, we encourage you to preheat them at home. Additionally, we are seeking volunteers to assist with the setup before and cleanup after. Your assistance is greatly appreciated!
After going back home and having a restful Sabbath afternoon nap, come back to church where at 5:00 pm we will have our Youth & Young Adult Christmas Party! Join this festive celebration that will include an outdoor Christmas worship program & bonfire, pizza, hot drinks, piñata, games and much more! We will also be having an optional $25 white elephant gift exchange, for those who’d like to participate! Bring your holiday spirit and a friend! 🎄
Lastly, on Sunday, December 3rd, there’s a wonderful opportunity to participate in the Senior Health Fair at the Orange SDA Church. This event is in collaboration with Americana Senior Care, and aims to provide guidance from professionals and facilities specializing in home health, medical insurance, hospice, and so much more! Join us from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM to explore health resources and engage in discussions on senior health.
We look forward to your presence and participation in these events as we come together to celebrate, share, and support one another. Wishing you a blessed and joyous Sabbath!
Dear Brothers and Sisters of the Anaheim SDA Church,
I hope your week started well. I would like to share some exciting things happening in our church. The first one is that our multimedia team live-streamed our service last Sabbath for the first time. I want to thank those involved in expanding the impact of our Church and worship service on the Internet. If you have not done so, please subscribe to the church’s YouTube channel. We started a brand-new series last Sabbath on Paul’s letter to Titus, and the first sermon is already available on the YouTube channel. The series is titled “While We Wait for the Blessed Hope.” I am sure the message the apostle Paul wrote to the young minister Titus while living on the island of Crete two thousand years ago still has power for our lives today.
While our audience is still modest, here are some observations our multimedia crew offered after our first live stream: please silence your cell phone during the service. Also, because the cameras do not include the back pews of the church during most of the recording, find a place for you and your family in the front pews; otherwise, it will give the impression that our church is empty, which is not the case!
We have quite a few events taking place in the following weeks in our church. The first one on our calendar is the Bonfire Vespers for youth and young adults on Friday, November 3rd, at 7 pm.
Next Sabbath (November 4th), the first of the month, is our potluck in the Fellowship Hall after service. Please bring a vegetarian dish of your choice, and let’s enjoy a wonderful time in fellowship. By the way, if you are bringing a hot dish, preheat it at home. Also, we need volunteers to help set up beforehand and clean afterward. Your help will be appreciated.
Another event to mark on your calendar is the Dinosaur Encounter that will take place on Sabbath, November 11th, at 7 pm with Rich Aguilera. It will be an excellent opportunity for kids and for grown-ups to hear about the subject from a biblical perspective from someone who has been studying the subject for several decades. Use the QR code on the image below to register for the event! The general admission is $15 per person.
One final event taking place in the area is the Archaeology Weekend at La Sierra University, in Riverside on November 11th and 12th (BTW, the schedule on Saturday does not conflict with our Dinosaur event). The topic for this year’s gathering is the Dead Sea Scrolls, the most important archaeological discovery of the 20th century. Scholars from several parts of the US will be there (there is one Israeli scholar scheduled to lecture but I am not sure if he will be able to leave Israel given the critical situation in the Middle East right now). The
poster of the event (together with the program) is attached to this email. I will participate responding to some of the presentations on Sunday and would be delighted to see you there. The event is hybrid, possible to attend in person and through zoom. Registration is required.
I would like to end this email with a phrase from Titus 1:2, which we discussed last Sabbath in church. Paul writes that God “cannot lie.” With that in mind, think of some of the promises of the Bible that you have cherished for many years. Here is one of my favorites: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). If God cannot lie, He is telling the truth that He will be with us wherever we go. As you and I go about our lives this week, either a peaceful one or a week full of challenges, let’s keep that in mind! God is with us.
See you next Sabbath!
In Christ,
Pr. Luiz Gustavo Assis
Dear Anaheim SDA Church,
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:2)
I hope you and your family are doing well. It’s been a delight to be involved with the Anaheim SDA church and to get you better every week. In the past three sermons, we reflected upon the book of Hosea, an Old Testament prophet with a powerful message about the seriousness of sin, forgiveness, and transformation. The book’s central message is God’s love for his unfaithful people worshipping other gods (Baal, the golden calf in Bethel) and seeking economic and military stability from earthly rulers (Assyria and Egypt). Even though the book was written in the 8th century BC, it still speaks to us as we live in the 21st century. What do we trust to guide our lives? Intellect? Technology? Politicians? These options have value, but ultimately, they are unreliable foundations on which to build our lives. Despite our stubbornness, God still looks for us to warn us that He is a reliable foundation, just as Hosea went after his unfaithful wife, Gomer. Yesterday, I found this song by Michael Card called “Song of Gomer” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hR8Bzes4OXA). Card’s song captures the core message of the book of Hosea!
Last Sabbath, we also started a new quarter in our Sabbath School. The topic for the next three months is God’s Mission, My Mission. The 19th-century English preacher Charles Spurgeon once said evangelism is “one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread.” We once heard about the precious grace of our God because someone told us about it. God expects Christians to share the beauty of the gospel with our lives and words. We invite you to be part of these conversations about the mission in which we will discuss biblical principles that will guide us in our efforts to share the gospel. We start at 10am!
Quite a few important events are taking place in our church in the following weeks. Take a moment to read about them in the announcement section of our website (https://anaheimadventist.org/2023/10/09/announcements-10-7-2023/).
I pray you will have a good rest of your week, and we will worship together on Sabbath morning!
In Christ,
